The Fool

Spirit of Aethyr

The face of 0, The Fool, engraved in gold on black, with its title, Spirit of Aethyr.

The open step into the unknown, taken with a free heart.

Upright

A fresh beginning with no guarantees and no baggage. Trust the impulse that is pulling you forward, even if you cannot explain it yet. The Fool is the breath before the word: pure potential, unwritten and unafraid.

Reversed

Recklessness, or the opposite: refusing to leap because you want a map first. Check whether you are being free or simply avoiding consequence.

The spirit work

Ariel rules the air between thoughts. Before a reading, take three slow breaths and empty the question of what you hope to hear. Dionysus asks you to let something sacred be a little wild.

A question to sit with

What would I try if I could not fail, and could not look foolish?

Notes on sources

The meanings, the questions and the correspondences are the guidebook’s own. The paths, letters and astrology follow the Golden Dawn’s attributions; the angels are the Shem ha-Mephorash, as the deck gives them; the spirits, shown only when you ask for them, are the seventy-two of the Goetia. Where each comes from, and what is old and what is modern, is set out in the guidebook’s Notes on sources and seals.
